Andrea Spaziani

Artist in Residence | Summer 2024

Andrea Spaziani records improvised moving and talking to create choreographic scores with interdisciplinary artists. This led to an interest in expressing dance as spatialized sound artifacts.

She recently completed DoppelTone: a sound-choreography web app compatible with accessibility technologies for artists and audiences living with vision loss. This work was supported by the Canada Council for the Arts - Strategic Innovation Fund, the CNIB, and a group of arts, tech, and accessibility experts.

Upcoming projects include a residency at the Emily Harvey Foundation in Venice, Italy to develop her new solo work “Crisis of Froth”, a workshop called "Scores for Nightmares" at Performance Philosophy in Austin, Texas with Julia Male and Fan Wu, and film screenings of the dance mockumentary “Aggro Infinitum: estrogen amnesia” co-created with Alicia Grant.

She holds an MFA in Creative Practice from the Transart Institute / Plymouth University and is a PhD candidate at the European Graduate School.

Badlands: A Dance In Time

Lobe Studio | August 2024

Badlands form a memory of the future. In an odyssey through time itself, layers of recordings made over four years carve out a landscape of bodily traces. Sound becomes a body of the real, chasing through pastures, interstellar strings, exquisite corpses of rhythm, shamanic whales, AI terrors, diesel roadhouse bars, truncated lifelines, and benedictions from the open road. Images cut into time like water cuts into stone. Happy trails.”

Sound-Choreography created and performed by Andrea Spaziani, Matt Smith / Prince Nifty, and Julia Male.

Also featuring recordings of Germaine Liu, Sofi Gudiño and Hurricane Hill.
Made in-residence at Port William Sound (2021), Union Sound Company (2022) and Lobe Studio (2024).

This project was made possible with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.
