Lobe is a spatial sound studio in Vancouver powered by 4DSOUND.

Founded in Vancouver in 2020, Lobe is the first dedicated spatial sound studio in North America to work with a permanently integrated 4DSOUND system.

An array of speakers across the ceiling and under the floor, in conjunction with custom-designed vibroacoustic floor panels, entirely surround the listener in an immersive and haptic listening experience. Using 4DSOUND technology, sound ebbs and flows, forming sonic environments holographically and without perceivable sources.

Strathcona Spatial Sound Society, the non-profit which operates Lobe, focuses on projects and practices related to immersive listening and the health of listeners and listening communities in relation with their environment.

Lobe is located on the unceded traditional and ancestral homelands of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. It is our privilege and honour to live, work and play on these lands.

Lobe was built by a group of dedicated volunteers and community enthusiasts; everything Lobe is and will become owes itself to their initial enthusiasm and efforts.

Our Mandate

From its inception, Lobe has had a mandate to assist in the destigmatization and accessibility of mental health. Lobe is located on East Hastings street in Vancouver with a mandate to serve all members of our community with a space and technology that can truly enhance mental health.

Spatial sound immersion is scientifically proven to greatly assist in cognitive-behavioral therapies, meditation practices, and somatic therapies. Its immersive nature is a powerful narrative tool to present stories about systemic problems in our society and natural environment. We are offering access to underrepresented and marginalized communities through our Elevate Initiative. The studio is committed to putting female-identifying, non-binary, and LGBTQ2+ artists in the foreground of our creative offerings.

We are listening. If you have a suggestion of how we can further assist marginalized communities, please connect with us.
