SIMULACRA | Live A/V
The performance will be divided into two parts, in conversation with each other.
PART 1 | SIMULACRA: SIMULACRA is DYSAART’s latest album, composed specifically for spatial audio. The album was spatialized during a residency in summer 2023 at the experimental performance space and spatial audio studio, MONOM, located in Berlin. The philosophical concept behind the album is derived from Jean Baudrillard’s 1981 treatise, Simulacra and Simulation, in which he suggests that contemporary human experience is a simulation of reality, as we have replaced meaning with sings and symbols. He argues that these symbols and signs (simulacra) are not merely copies of a “real” thing, but have meaning and truth in themselves… a copy with no original… representing a sort of hyper-reality. SIMULACRA explores this concept through the re-contextualization and manipulation of field recordings, transforming familiar sonic textures into ethereal atmospheres, guiding listeners through the emotional narrative of a film that doesn’t exist. The visual component of this piece is an interpretation of the aforementioned film, as envisioned by Laine Butler.
PART 2 | LIVE A/V: The live AV set is a collaboration between DYSAART, ephemeral objects, and Laine Butler that merges the forefront of new media art with an audio-visual journey through abstract visual narratives and soundscapes inspired by SIMULACRA. ephemeral objects and Laine Butlers visuals evolve together in real-time to DYSAART, creating an immersive synergistic experience.
