Jordan Juras & perila
Artist-Duo | Artists-in-Residence, May 2023
perila is a Berlin-based sound and visual artist, DJ and performer exploring sensitive borderlines and depths of subtle matter. She is a co-founder of radio.syg.ma, WET platform and engaged in several other music projects such as Aseptic Stir, as well as collaborations with fellow musicians.
Her music is dense narratives drifting through a rich sound palette submerging a listener into a pretty personal trip. Constantly shifting moods and textures, Perila creates comfort space for emotions to float, merge, evaporate and ride in a deep context. Her practice is aimed to challenge and overcome boundaries and share this expansion with the Other.
Jordan Juras is a Canadian born, Berlin based immersive artist, music producer, and audio-related research engineer. He releases music under the aliases PVAS, NUG, and Available on Computers.
With a background in Spatial Audio research he began developing immersive experiences in 2019, with a practice that explores subconscious or invisible externalities, and challenges behavioural responses that shape our experience. He has created immersive works for the Ultima Festival (Oslo NO, 2021), the Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology at ZhdK (Zurich CH, 2021), and the Screen City Biennial (Stavanger NO, 2019).
Other Space
otherspace is a generative, audio-reactive sound experience that refigures the smartphone in the service of detaching from the habitual, exploring the subtle, and empowering sustainable relationships with externalities that influence our day-to-day. otherspace records your sound environment and re-presents interesting sounds as compositional elements within four atmospheric ‘spaces.’
Each space is generated in response to your surroundings, composed of spatial dimensions that are accessible with headphones. With each use, otherspace deepens its interpretations of your surroundings and their connection with each space.
During a research residency at Lobe Studio in May 2023, perila composed and refined the sound material of the app’s four spaces, and Juras prototyped the spatial audio dynamics that were eventually reimplemented within the app framework. As a culmination of the residency, they presented their research outcomes to a private audience via the 4DSOUND sound system. The piece they recorded at Lobe, and presented in dialog with field recordings captured throughout Vancouver during the residency period, is a composition that will feature in the otherspace app.
otherspace will be released in spring 2024 on Android and iOS devices. A compilation of field recordings documenting experiences of collaborating with otherspace in different cities around the world will be published in summer 2024.
Lobe is thrilled to present this stage in this project's development in anticipation of otherspace's worldwide release.
