Lucien Durey

Artist in Residence | Fall 2023

Lucien Durey is an artist, writer, and singer based in Vancouver on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. His practice engages with found objects, photographs, places, and sounds that form the basis for artworks in mixed media, sculpture, and performance.

His vocal compositions, often performed with family and friends, feature multi-part harmonies and incorporate bottles, vases, or other glassware, as unconventional instruments and improvised tuning devices. Recent projects include Endless Summer (2023) at the Gordon Smith Gallery, North Vancouver, created in collaboration Katie Kozak and curated by Jenn Jackson; and Spots (2022), created in collaboration with Katie Kozak and commissioned for Platforms: We Are Here, Live by the City of Vancouver Public Art Program. He holds a BFA from Emily Carr University and an MFA from Simon Fraser University's School for the Contemporary Arts.

During this Fall 2023 artist residency, Durey will be preparing for a presentation of compositions, including several created with Ian Wyatt at Lobe in January of 2022. The songs feature layered vocals as well as improvised instruments, including vases, glass bottles and crystal glasses. For presentation, the spatialized compositions will be further activated through Durey's live singing in the space.
