Dreams of Yiddishland: A Spatial Sound Experience

Sunday September 21st, 7:45pm

Dreams of Yiddishland: A Spatial Sound Experience is an immersive night of deep listening and diasporic ritual, tracing the echoes of Yiddish culture through electronic music, ancestral memory, and political resistance. Exiliahu performs organic lullabies built from anti-State and anti-imperialist Yiddish poetry and protest songs, complete with tactile percussion sounds, layered vocals, and angular guitar lines. Closing the night, Chaia brings her signature blend of archival Yiddish recordings, atmospheric drones and deep, acid-inflected techno, performing a set that transforms a classic sabbath prayer into a space of ancestral reckoning.

Designed for a Lobe's spatial sound system featuring 35 speakers, this event invites you to listen with your whole body. Come dance, mourn, sleep, and enjoy dreams of Yiddishland.

Chaia is an electronic composer working at the intersection of Yiddish culture and electronic club music. She weaves archival Yiddish samples with techno and ambient frameworks, creating hybrid folk electronic compositions that situate ancestral sound within global and liberatory rave ecologies. In live performance, she weaves together accordion, vocals, and samples - inviting audiences to engage with ritual, intergenerational trauma, and ancestral memory.

Chaia works closely with Yiddish archives to identify, highlight, and catalog Yiddish material for her electronic work. These include the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, The Yiddish Book Center, Yiddish Song of the Week, and the personal archives of Hankus Netsky and the Hoffman Family. has performed internationally at The NAMM Show, Pop Montreal, KlezMore Vienna, Shtetl Berlin, Sonic Territories, and more. Chaia’s mixes have been featured on The Lot Radio, dublab, Great Circles, and Res Radio. She’s been profiled by Grammy.com, NPR’s Art of the Story, Annabel Ross, and others. Chaia has collaborated with Russell Elevado, Dan Tombs, Sidney Mills and the Klezmatics and her work has been supported by New York State’s Council for the Arts, the Brooklyn Arts Council, The Goethe Institute, and the Center for Traditional Music and Dance.

Exhiliahu (Elijah Lake Holstein) is a multi-(un)disciplinary artist and composer gratefully living and working on the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlilwətaɬ peoples - so called Vancouver. His debut album is titled Why Have You Stolen the Blue and White Colours from Our Honest Sky. The album’s lyrics are drawn primarily from the anti-Zionist and anti-imperialist Yiddish poetry and protest songs of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
