About the album:
"Milao, which means “to come together,” is an exploration of memory, time, and the shifting landscapes of belonging. Inspired by Indian raga and folk music, the album weaves analog textures, live vocals, and field recordings, creating a rich sonic experience.
The music draws deeply from sounds carried through family, songs and melodies heard from Piu’s mother and the matriarchs of her family, threads of folk and classical traditions that quietly shape the album’s unfolding. Field recordings root the work in place and memory: bubbling brooks near her grandmother’s home in Kolkata, dhaak drummers preparing for the evening procession during Durga Puja in a neighbour’s home, birds recorded in the foothills of the Himalayas. These fragments of sound move between geographies and generations.
Beneath the album runs a quiet meditation on loss, the echoes of family histories shaped by the Partition of India, and the ways those histories continue to reverberate. Through Milao, Piu gives voice to that inherited absence while also imagining new futures.
Layering modular and analog synthesizers with her own vocals and organic textures, Milao becomes a meeting ground: of cultures and places, of past and present, of grief and renewal. It is an act of gathering and holding memory while reshaping it into something that can move forward."
