Transposition

In October 2021, the Lobe team travelled to Berlin and Frankfurt to present “Transposition” as part of Canada’s Guest of Honour appearance at the Frankfurt Book Fair. This spatial sound installation featured artists Tanya Tagaq, Brandon Wint, Charlotte Day Wilson and YuSu and took place at MONOM, Lobe’s sister 4DSOUND venue in Berlin, and at a temporary installation in Tokonoma, a venue in downtown Frankfurt. The immersive program demonstrated the inseparability of spoken word, music, and oration, by presenting Canadian literature and storytelling in the form of recorded narrative, interwoven with musical composition and sound-design.

Made possible by:

Transposition was a project developed by Sound Diplomacy Berlin and Lobe Studio Vancouver in collaboration with FACTOR and the Government of Canada as part of Canada’s Guest of Honour Presence at the Frankfurt Bookfair 2021.

"Transposition" refers to the process of changing place, or context. For this project four Canadian artists were invited to reimagine existing works as spatialized sound pieces using 4DSOUND technology, allowing these pieces to both move and travel independent of the performers themselves.

The response was amazing and the shows were sold out in both cities, seeing a total of over 2000 people out to the exhibition. This was the first time Lobe had facilitated an overseas installation and it could not have been done without help from some of our talented friends at 4DSOUND and MONOM. The project was funded by FACTOR and Heritage Canada and was co-produced by Sound Diplomacy in Berlin. The hope is to present this work at home in Vancouver sometime in the not-so-distant future.
