Dark Fires is an emergent project created by dance artist Erika Mitsuhashi. Inspired by her friend Brynn McNab's redacted poetry project with Harlequin romance novels, "Kiss and Tell," what started as a general fascination with the question, "What is romance?" has budded into a practice of redacted poetry and live readings. The poems are full of yearning and eroticism; they simmer passages down to a simpler beauty within these mostly hetero normative narratives.
Through these collages, Mitsuhashi collapses the many layers of time that female eroticism has had to be concealed in romance novels, and is excited to breathe these poems with the energy of lusting: be it that of the teenager, the 35 year old, the 65 year old and beyond. She brings together a selection of poems that will be fed through the spatialized system of Lobe, to lay among the lush, pillowy experimental live compositions of orbital hosts Alex Penney and Dave Biddle. She invites audiences to listen, and let their imaginations fill in the details of what gets left out. What's hotter than indulging in your own imagination?
